About this department

The present Japan owes its convenient life and strong economy to well-developed social infrastructures including traffic facilities (roads, railways, airports, port and harbor), educational facilities(school, library), medical facilities, energy facilities(nuclear, thermal, hydroelectric power generation), and energy stock/delivery systems. Although Japan is exposed to a potential risk of being hit by major earthquake and tsunami, disastrous typhoon and heavy rain, much less damage is expected to occur for human lives and properties compared to other countries. This fact owes to various disaster prevention measures including efficient flood control measurements and landslide countermeasure. This course aims to study necessary technical systems for citizens to enjoy healthy life.

Unique

Course of Civil and Environmental Engineering integrates civil engineering, architecture, and science of disaster prevention with geophysical sciences. Various technologies are used to develop new technologies and to advance design theory needed for the social infrastructure development can be studied from the basics to the advanced level. Our unique educational program employs "system of studies." Each student choice either one of "structural design studies" or "regional environmental management studies" after completing the study of basics of specialized subjects by end of the sophomore year. It is possible to take subjects needed for licensing of Japanese registered architectural engineer (Kenchikushi) for both courses.

Introduction

Structures and Materials

Structures and materials group studies structural analysis, earthquake and wind resistant design, design of reinforced concrete structures, new materials for the safer design and construction of structures including bridges and buildings etc.

Disaster Science and Mitigation

Disaster science and mitigation group studies natural disaster mitigation for earthquakes, tsunamis, and heavy rain. This group also covers disaster prevention systems of river and coast, slope stability analysis, and soil/ground improvement technologies.

Regional and Environmental Planning

Regional and environmental planning group studies theory and methodology for urban and regional planning, transportation planning, environmental planning, landscape planning, urban and environmental design, and ecosystem engineering.
